MOD 0: Check in at the Foreign Police

As an EU citizen, moving to the Czech Republic, you have 30 days to register at the foreign police.

Every foreigner who comes to the Czech Republic is required to register with the foreign police. If you're a tourist, your hotel will register you. If you are planning to move to the Czech Republic, you need to register yourself.

If you wait longer than 30 days, the Foreign police can impose a fine of 3000Kc, so try to go early in your stay.

A word of caution: The Foreign Police are somewhat notorious for not speaking English.  That actually works to your advantage because they’ll ask you less questions. Don’t fear going to the Foreign Police without a translator. We’ve all done it.

Another warning, the queues can be long. We advise you to arrive a half-hour or so before opening hours, if possible. They stop issuing numbers 60 minutes before closing, so make sure you arrive before then. You cannot make an appointment online if this is your initial check in.

Here’s what you’ll need to bring:

  • You’ll need your passport or residency card.
  • Your Original Czech Lease and 1 copy -OR- a Proof of Accommodation (download below). You’ll need some proof of where you’ll reside in the Czech Republic. You can bring your original flat lease to prove this. Do not allow them to keep your original lease. It’s best to bring a photocopy of your lease for them to keep. They might offer to make a copy, and they might not, so it's best to be prepared. If you do not have your original lease, you can bring a Proof of Accommodation (download below). It must be signed and notarized by the majority owner of your flat.

Here's how you fill it out.

  • You’ll need to show proof of health insurance in your own country, like your EHIC card. It can also be travel insurance. **This is an official requirement, but often the Foreign Police glaze over it. Since you’re applying for a Živno, You will be registering for Czech Health Insurance after you receive it, and we'll show you how to do that in this course.
  • When you get to the Foreign police, you’ll need to fill out a small white card, that they provide for you. It’s in English, but you can see how to fill it out here:

The Foreign Police is open:

Mon & Wed: 8am-5pm

Tues & Thurs: 8am-3pm

Fri: 8am-12pm

They are located at Olsanska 2, Praha 3 (tram stop Olšanská).

Once you arrive at the Foreign Police, press the first button on the screen, "Tourist registration." Grab a white card next to the ticket machine.

Wait until your number is called and give them the documents listed above. The officer will keep the small white card, but give you everything else back. Again, make sure they don't keep your original lease.

The police officer will put a red stamp either in your passport  or on the small form you submitted and give it back to you. Make sure you keep this stamp if it's not in your passport. They will also register your address in the system.

Once you’ve registered with the foreign police, you’re ready to move on to your Živno application. See you in the next lesson!
